ALERT Ohio's new law puts eligible voters at risk of being purged from voter rolls. Naturalized citizens are especially vulnerable.

Ohio Senate Bill 293, is new for this year and threatens your right to vote.

What SB 293 Does

Monthly voter purges using outdated Bureau of Motor Vehicles and federal databases that may still list you as a non-citizen even if you’ve naturalized

No advance notice before your registration is cancelled

Purges continue right up to Election Day — violates federal law’s 90-day quiet period before elections

New proof of citizenship requirements at polls for voters flagged by the system

Eliminates grace period for absentee ballots — they must arrive by Election Day close of polls

Who’s at Risk

Naturalized citizens whose BMV records haven’t been updated since becoming citizens
Voters with data mismatches — name changes from marriage, typos in government databases
Anyone flagged by outdated records in state or federal systems

What You Must Do

Verify Your Registration NOW

Check your status immediately. You could be purged without warning.

Update Your Information

If you’ve naturalized, changed your name, or moved – make sure your registration reflects current, accurate information.

Have Documentation Ready

If you’re a naturalized citizen:

Bring your U.S. passport OR naturalization certificate when you vote
If you have a driver’s license with “noncitizen” marker, you MUST bring citizenship proof

Know What Happens If You’re Challenged

If election officials challenge your citizenship and you can’t provide proof at the polls:

You must cast a provisional ballot
You have only 4 days after Election Day to return to the Board of Elections with proof of citizenship
If you don’t provide proof within 4 days, your vote will not count

In Ohio, 1 in 4 provisional ballots are not counted.

In 2024, over 34,000 provisional ballots were thrown out.

Acceptable Proof of Citizenship

U.S. Passport
Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
Birth certificate showing U.S. birth

This is voter suppression masquerading as election integrity.

SB 293 Is Being Challenged. Anything could happen. Be prepared.

The ACLU, League of Women Voters of Ohio, and Campaign Legal Center have filed a federal lawsuit challenging SB 293 as unconstitutional. The law:

Violates the National Voter Registration Act’s prohibition on systematic purges within 90 days of elections
Violates the Fourteenth Amendment’s due process clause by removing voters without adequate notice
Discriminates against naturalized citizens by relying on outdated data
